A PORTION OF MY TO-DO LIST
-
BUDGET -- Want to see to the penny. Research and address how much school pays for non-acadamic things; can we save money here? Employ Grant Writer to access all possible grants for our schools? Any other suggestions? Must stay within budget - no tax increase.
-
Immigration education programs are devouring our budget. Inform the community of what our school is required to do by the State so they understand the impact.
-
ENFORCE 100% non-residents attending our schools
-
Transparency and Outreach with community
-
Build more parent committees/hold more public information sessions for complaints, information, etc.
-
Recruit non-English-speaking parents to form committees to have a voice within the school system
-
Bring vaccinations to schools for easier access for all children and convenience for parents
-
Bring Junior ROTC program to West Haven High School (I've been requesting that for over two years now)
-
Continue Pam Gardner's research regarding bringing in a barber/hairstylist program. She really wanted this.
-
Must improve support for teachers with disruptive/dangerous children in classroom. Enforce zero tolerance for behavior in classrooms.
-
Must hold parents accountable for their children's behavior. Need more aggressive measures. Suggestions?
-
Explore Educational Detention/Suspension Program. Bring in police officers, judges, lawyers, social workers, probation officers, etc., to educate students of consequences of behavior; i.e. juvenile crime, bike theft, vandalism, assault, breaking and entering, trespassing, etc. Counseling on goals, where they see themselves in the future, research Big Brothers/Big Sisters program for troubled youth, etc.
-
Readdress and revise discipline policy (case-by-case basis). I am not a fan of punishing victims of bullying.
-
Move Foreign Languages to elementary and middle schools so fluent by high school
-
School Security AND Bus Safety
-
Modernize our outdated curriculum.
-
Dual enrollment (chance to earn dual high school diploma and AS degree upon graduation)
-
Eliminate Honors courses – either regular, AP, or dual enrollment
-
Address burdensome testing. While more and more colleges are recognizing the little value testing has on student outcomes and are quickly becoming test optional, we are requiring more and more courses at the high school level to increase test scores and are not taking any other course requirements away.
-
Establish Mental Health Council to better address needs of students
-
Address high school registration issues. Too inefficient and inconvenient for parents the way it is done now.
-
Establish Math Council to research and communicate with State colleges and universities in order to address the gap from HS math to college math
-
Address the need for more guidance counselors (caseloads too heavy)
